Bursera simaruba
The Bursera simaruba is commonly know as the Gumbo-Limbo. It can be found throughout Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean Islands and Florida. The Gumbo-Limbo normally grows to about 30 m tall, and has a medium trunk size. The Gumbo-Limbo is sometimes called the Tourist Tree, due to its red peeling bark that looks like the skin of a sunburned tourist. In March and April the tree provides fruit to the birds in the area. The Gumbo-Limbo is a strong tree that can grow in many different conditions. It is fairly hurricane resistant as well, which makes it a wise choice for residents of areas that have frequent storms.
