Various Bats
110 species of bats are found in Costa Rica, out of 210 species of mammals found there. The many bats become active after sunset, leaving their caves to hunt or socialize. Bats are omnivores, eating small insects as well as fruits and nectar. The only bat that eats livestock is the vampire bat, which causes $100 million in livestock damage yearly. All 3 vampire bat species reside in Costa Rica.
Most bats live in colonies, depending on each other for company and sometimes for food. Since bats are often exposed to complete darkness, they use echolocation to navigate in the pitch black night. By using ultrasonic cries, these bats can figure out their surroundings by the echo and pitch that they receive.
Most bats have 'lunarphobia', or the fear of moonlight. Because competition is higher in the moonlight, and it is easier to ambush prey while in complete darkness, bats usually stay in the shadows.
