Enterolobium cyclocarpum
The Enterolobium cyclocarpum, more commonly known as the Ear Tree or Guanacaste, is a species of tree. It normally grows 25- 35 meters tall, and has a 3.5 meter trunk. The Guanacaste fruit is usually 7-12 cm in diameter. They are pod-like, and come in a dark brown coloring. The seed maturation happens at the same time as the rainy season.
The Guanacaste is used as a shade tree by cattle and on coffee plantations because of its broad leaves. The Guanacaste has interesting wood, that is mildly waterproof and is commonly used for furniture and doors. The Guanacaste's seeds are used to make jewelry in some parts of Costa Rica. This tree is called the Ear Tree because of the seed pod that looks like an elephant ear. The Ear Tree actually originated in Mexico, and was brought to Central America by horses.
